‘Until about twenty years ago hemp provided the best twine, and fishing nets were made with hemp twine. The nets and twine were produced in an artisanal way by families who lived on the margins of fishing activities. The woman in the photograph is carrying a bale of hemp fibre ready to be spun. This picture, which I took by chance, went around the world.’ — Cesco Ciappana, 1979
